Pictures Tell (Part of) the Story — 4 Comments

  1. Good blog about the old school merry-go-round. I saw some things I don’t remember telling you and don’t tell me you found them on-line. I guess nothing would surprise me.

  2. I have never seen one of those, but now I’m trying to figure out how to build one. It looks like so much fun!

Did people tend to fall into the middle? I’m trying to figure out why they made the center area smaller.

    • Sheryl, I think they made the center smaller so it would not swing up as high on one side and then come down hard on the center pole as it circled around. That’s how we played on it! Depending how many kids were on it and how the weight was distributed it would become a wild fun ride. Someone could get hurt if their legs were extended over the bar as it came close to the center pole. I don’t remember any of us getting hurt- maybe a splinter from the wooden seat!

  3. What a good story! I was going to ask your Mom if we cousins
played on it in the 40’s as kids. I guess we did! I have a faint memory of it.
